Put about 140 rounds through her today for sighting in, and some fun.
I have a nice bruise on my shoulder from the metal buttstock but it's a good hurt.
The range was busy, and I could not get a rest for the rifle so I rested the front of it on my range bag, and held it for sighting in.
20 shots of Golden tiger at 50 yards looks like this:
I did terrible at 100 yards only putting 11/20 into an 8" shoot 'n' see iron sighted, and hand held.
The ones that missed the shoot 'n' see were close enough to have done the job on a man sized target though.
I would love to blame the short sight radius, imported ammo, or an old slightly pitted barrel but the truth is probably the operator needs a steadier hand, and better eyesight. _________________
My good friend whom I have known for more than 30 years asked me to help him build an AK.
I picked up a nice 1986 Romy 'G' kit from Brad at Gunthings as well as all the parts needed to comply with 922(r).
We worked on it both Friday night (into early Saturday morning), and most of Saturday to complete it.
This morning we test fired it at the range.
Some slight filing needed during the first 10 rounds to smooth things out, and then 200 flawless (and quite accurate) rounds followed.
My good friend was very happy, and I got to be a part of another build for a good friend like I had done with Glum.
Before:
And after:
That makes 6 that I have had a hand in bringing back from the scrap heap.
All still firing away strong. _________________
After putting a new barrel on her the accuracy was outstanding for imported ammo, and an AK so I foot the bill for an Aimpoint Comp ML3 red dot with quick detach mount, and a Samson rail that replaces the rear sight leaf (wasn't happy with the UTG rail, and wanted to put the wood back on her.
Some updated Pics:
And how she shoots 10 shot groups at 100 yards:
Most people think of an AK as a 3-4MOA rifle. With a new barrel, and good red dot mine is a 2.5MOA rifle with me behind the sight.
I will continue to try to improve on that, and the next time I go to Ione (300 yard range) I will see what she can do at 300.
In other news I am helping another friend build his first AK.
I will post pictures when complete. _________________

Nico, you may want to resize those pictures. Loading the page caused my internet to hemorrhage and disconnect. _________________

Better?
Yes it is better, and it's more a matter of a craptastic router than the actual internet. I'm currently looking for one that can handle the bandwidth our home network demands. _________________

Helping my buddy Rick with his build has got me yearning for another build of my own.
This time I dream of an AK pistol.
Although In free states one can pay the $200 for a tax stamp, and gain approval to build a short barreled rifle.
Not so in CA without local law enforcement approval (which ain't gonna happen where I live)
We can however build our own pistols just like we can build our own rifles (for our own use).
Now having a pistol with a detachable magazine outside of the grip is a big NO-NO in CA.
Enter the bullet button. Now we have (by definition) a fixed magazine pistol.
Obtaining a semi- automatic pistol that is not on the CADOJ approved handgun list in CA is also a big NO-NO.
So we build it as a single shot pistol with a magazine that has the follower locked up to the top of the magazine so it's only a sled, and cannot hold more than 1 round in the pistol at a time.
Now it's doesn't have to be on the roster since it's a single shot pistol.
There is no law that says that after it's built we cannot modify the magazine to hold more than one round (i.e. use a tool to remove our (technically) fixed magazine, and insert a 10 rounder (maximum allowed in CA unfortunately).
You remember that for the rifle builds I had to comply with 922(r) which says that you cannot import a whole rifle, and had to have no more than 10 imported parts.
This does not apply since we're building a pistol
Now the only worry is registration............Oh wait....There is no law that says we need to register a pistol that we build for our own use.
There are a few things to consider during construction though since constructive possession is in effect in CA as well as rulings that you cannot turn a rifle into a pistol (legally) .
So we make sure to mark the flat before we bend it "Pistol, and NON-transferable". I will also be marking it with the other information normally found on a receiver (name of manufacturer, City, and state of manufacture, caliber (7.62x39 ), unique serial number, and model number (FUCADOJ))
Now there is no question that it is a pistol receiver when bent (even though it's exactly the same as a rifle receiver), and we do not intend to transfer it so it's built for our own use.
We also make sure that we use a rear trunnion that cannot accept a stock (that would trigger constructive possession of a SBR even if it didn't have a stock on it yet.)
I am using a Romanian underfolder stock trunnion (solid back), and bending a flat without any holes in the sides where the stock would normally attach so it cannot accept a stock.
I have a Yugo barrel that I pulled off my Yugo that I will be cutting down, and re-profiling to fit Egyptian FSB,GB,and RSB (from a Egyptian kit I ordered for $135).
I will also be (cutting down, and ) welding the front sight base to the gas block so it's one piece. I ordered a shorter gas piston, and will also be cutting down the gas tube to fit the new length of the piston system.
All in all this should run me about $250 to build since I have some parts laying around (barrel, rear trunnion, railed hand guards, etc).
I figure I can get to a 9 1/2"-10" barrel on it.
And should look something like this when I am done:
Minus the forward vertical grip. The one below belong to a neighbor of mine who paid the $200, and gained approval for the vertical forward grip.
More like this one
Should be fun to build, and more so to shoot.
So obtaining a short barreled rifle is next to impossible in CA but remove the stock, and build it as a pistol, and it's doable legally here.
I hate stupidly written laws that have '0' effect on crime so this is my way of 'flipping the bird' at the flawed system. _________________

The more I hear about your builds Nico, the more I'm happy I don't live in California. Right now I'm looking forward to buying a 14 round pistol and, waaaaaaaaaaaaay down the road, a full auto G36 (if the local DOJ will allow me to buy one from a law enforcement/military dealer, since H&K doesn't sell the G36 to civilians despite the lift of the assault weapons ban) _________________

Full auto for any non-LEO or military will be difficult for anyone in the US (No matter what state) to obtain. That is a Federal law that bans full auto for civilians unless you owned them before the ban (and they are registered as Assault weapons ...different stipulations for traveling with RAW, and where you can legally shoot them) or are licensed by the BATF to buy/ sell/ maintain them (think FFL...class 10 I believe.).
... . Now a semi-auto version is totally doable even in my state. i would need a bullet button, and 10 round mag on it or make it as a featureless rifle (Kydex grip wrap, no flash hider, no collapsing./ folding stock).

My buddy Rick's rifle is almost 100% complete as of today. All put together, and fit EXCEPT the ejector is just a bit short .
This means we'll have to pull the center support, and grind all the welds holding the left interior rail. Remove said rail, and replace it then re-install the center support.
Hey, feces occur but this is still repairable as I happen to have an extra ejector rail laying around. Other than that rifle looks great, and cycles perfect (when no ammo is in it). Trigger tuned, and set up correctly. Also fit he Egyptian rear trunnion to his Romy kit so he could have a solid stock (his kit came as an underfolder).
I will post pictures, and a range report when complete (soon).
I have punched , and bent up my pistol build flat into a receiver, and heat treated.
That 'poor man's jig' I built has bent 7 nice receivers to date
I have started cleaning the cosmoline off of the rest of my parts, and have received all of them except the screw set, and short (replacement) gas piston.
This build should test my skills as I will have to re-profile a Yugo barrel to fit the Egyptian FSB,GB, and RSB. Cut said barrel, and re-crown the end. Thread it for 14x1 LH threads (I bought the die for that). Cut the gas tube, and swedge one end, and weld it together for the shorter gas piston. Cut the FSB, and fit it to the GB then weld the two together.
Cut the aluminum railed fore grip to fit my shortened gas system.
Still also need to decide if i want to install the Krink style muzzle brake i have or a standard slant brake. Drill, and tap for a sling swivel on the back of the rear trunnion for single point sling + much more.
I have already constructed a sled magazine ('0' capacity) for legality (as mentioned before I need to build this as a single shot fixed magazine pistol to be legal here but after it's documented as such I can modify it to hold 10 round mags (maximum allowed in CA).
Modification is as simple as using my 'tool' to remove the sled mag, and inserting a 10/20 or 10/30 magazine.
That reminds me. I am building 2 10/20 magazines out of 2 30 round rebuild kits I have as well. Will need to cut the magazines to 20 round length, bend new floor plate tabs on the base then block the interior at holding 10 rounds, and tack weld the baseplate on.
I can tell this will take me a while to complete but that's half the fun for me is building them _________________
